Do this, in order
- Don't operate any electrical switches — not lights, not the boiler, nothing. A spark can ignite escaping gas.
- Put out any naked flames and don't smoke.
- Open windows and doors to ventilate, if you can do so without operating any switches.
- Turn off the gas supply at the meter if you know where it is and can reach it safely.
- Leave the property if the smell is strong or not clearing.
- Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 — this is free, available 24/7, and is the right first call, before calling any engineer including us.
Why this order matters
The emergency service can advise you immediately and dispatch someone to make the situation safe — that's their specific job, and it's faster than any engineer callout for an active gas escape. Once the immediate danger is confirmed resolved, that's the point to call us for any repair work needed.
A real example
We traced a genuine gas leak to a damaged section of copper pipe hidden beneath floorboards in Dudley — not something visible or obvious from above the floor. Read the full case study. It's a good illustration of why a smell of gas with no obvious source still needs a proper trace, not guesswork.
Once it's safe, and if it turns out to be a fault we can help with, you can reach us on 07413 385767.
